Pressure group, Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) an affiliate to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) says the 15% increment in transport fares is politically motivated.
The group has described as unacceptable and unfair, the increment after government announced some major tax cuts including that on petroleum.
Speaking in an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, Mr. Arnold Boateng, General Secretary of AFAG said, the Minister of Transport was not smart enough and believes has brought upon the government a negative image.
The former NDC government he stated rejected an attempt by transport operators to increase transport fares hence, wonders why this administration allowed the transport operators to have their way.
The plight of commuters he decried should be of prime concern. AFAG he explained was formed to serve the interest of Ghanaians and not any political party. ‘’We are serving the interest of Ghanaians and do not speak for or on behalf of any party.
Those claiming that we are affiliated to the NPP are misinformed.
Our priority is to serve the country and we will continue to speak against any form of injustice and bad governance.
We will promote and pursue good governance. We will continue to put pressure on government if we feel their actions will not benefit Ghanaians.’’
A statement released by transport operators in Ghana said, the increment is line with the Administrative Instrument on public fares.
The statement said, ‘’the road transport operators have reviewed the prices of various elements that go into running of commercial transport services and have increased road transport fares by 15%.’’
The increment the statement further indicated, cover the following transport operators; Intra-City (Trotro); Inter-City (Long Distance) and Taxi Cabs.
