New Accra mayor to give Agbogbloshie ‘special attention’

Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Mohammed Adjei Sowah says his administration is going to turn attention to Agbogbloshie in a move to transform the country’s biggest slum.

He said not only will there be constant sanitation exercises in that community but also by-laws of the Assembly will be enforced so “that we have a clean city”.

He made this known on Saturday, April 1 when he joined a handful of people in the National Sanitation Day exercise. He expressed disappointment in citizen participation in the exercise, observing that “the market traders seem not to care about what is going on”.

He said a conscious effort will be made to educate citizens on the need for cleanliness. As for Agbogbloshie, the mayor suggested, it will be treated as a special case. “My administration will make sure we give it a special attention,” he indicated.

“Not only collecting the garbage but the attitude of the people, providing sanitary works and also enforcing the rules are some of the things we have to put in place so that we have a clean city.”
