Sunyani, March 9, GNA- As part of the nation’s 47th Independence Anniversary celebration, soldiers of the Third Garrison in Sunyani on Monday held an Open Day at the Liberation Barracks to showcase military activities to thousands of civilians.
The military personnel entertained them with music provided by the Third Generation Band of the Garrison. The occasion formed part the national programme by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) units throughout the country to round off activities of the anniversary.
The day afforded the general public to get an insight, into the operations of the Armed Forces to help remove the perceived fear for the military and show that soldiers are friendly and are fellow Ghanaians. Nana Kwadwo Seinti, Regional Minister and his wife, Augustina, Mr. Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive and Mr. Emmanuel W.K. Kusi, Sunyani District Director of Education were among the large crowd, including school children from basic and Senior Secondary Schools (SSS).
Lieutenant-Colonel Alhassan Abu, the Commanding Officer conducted the dignitaries round the various stands and the soldiers had a hectic time in controlling the children who were so inquiring about the military wares that were exhibited.
Accompanied by Lt.Col. Abu and the Regimental Sergeant-Major (RSM) Lure Kanton, the Regional Minister inspected a Guard after which Captain Edward Awaribey briefed him about the programme.
Immediately after that, RSM Kanton took command of the Guard Changing Display at the Quarter Guard.
Nana Seinti and his entourage later visited the Anyidoho Peace Monument, witnessed an obstacle crossing demonstration at the physical training grounds and inspected two MOWAG vehicles.
The Regional Minister also watched battle and mortar drills and he, Mr. Baffour-Awuah and Mrs. Seinti were given the chance to fire some of the guns amidst cheers from the crowd.
Later Nana Seinti, his wife, and some of the dignitaries were driven round in one of the MOWAG vehicles.
Lt. Col. Abu assured the general public that “soldiers of today are friendly and should not be seen as enemies.
