Assembly and ISODEC spend 160 million cedis on girl-child education

Tepa (Ash), March 3, GNA- The Ahafo-Ano North District Assembly and the Integrated Social Development Centre (ISODEC) last year spent about 160 million cedis on girl-child education in the district. This has brought a lot of improvement in the education in the district with special reference to girls whose education before the launch of the Girl-Child Project was not given priority in the communities.

This was made known by Mr Benjamin Owusu-Afriyie, the Desk Officer of the project when he presented his annual report on the project at a forum organised by the assembly and ISODEC at Tepa on Monday.

Mr Owusu-Afriyie said 360 brilliant but needy girls at the basic and senior secondary schools were awarded scholarships to cover the payment of school and examination fees, school uniform and stationery while a two-week vocation classes were organised for about 3,000 junior secondary school girls to study mathematics, English and science. He said some schools in the district were provided with library books, textbooks, teaching aids and chalk while in-service training were given to some School Management Committees (SMCs) on school management and supervision.

The Ahafo-Ano North district assembly and ISODEC signed a memorandum of understanding in 1998 for the promotion of girl-child education in the district. The first phase of the project, which lasted three years ended in December 2001, while the second phase, which commenced in 2002 is expected to end in December this year.
