AUCC to organize mental health seminar for students – Dr. Anim-Wright

The number of suicide cases recorded on the various campuses in the country keeps rising as the days go by.

Sometime last month, it was reported of a KNUST student committing suicide in a room, soon after that there was another report of a legon final year student also committing suicide.

In view of this alarming situation, the management of Africa University of Communication Studies is planning a mental health seminar for all its students.

Dr. Koeyoe Anim-Wright, president of the school in an interview with Ghanaweb said “Individuals who commit suicide feel isolated, therefore, the was the need for the school to organize such programs to sensitized the students”.

She said the school has arranged with local nearby hospitals, where they can refer students to but the most important thing is to make their students know that they are not alone in whatever situation they made find themselves.

This initiative is believe to be in accordance with the statement issued out by the Mental Health Authority, which says “the alarming rate of suicide can be prevented if the society and counselling centers in schools played their roles effectively”.
