EOCO biased – Kofi Akpaloo

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has been selective in dealing with alleged corrupt officials in the country, Kofi Akpaloo, Founder and Leader of the Independent People’s Party (IPP) now renamed Liberal Party of Ghana, has said.

According to him, the state investigative outfit only goes after officials of a past government but cannot deal with corrupt officials in an incumbent government.

His comment follows the freeze of the bank accounts of Daniel Ohene Agyekum, a former Board Chairman of Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

Similarly, the assets and bank accounts of Dr Stephen Opuni, former Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD, have been frozen by EOCO as part of their investigation into some contracts that were awarded.

Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM, Mr Akpaloo said: “They (EOCO) have not been able to deal with corrupt officials in an incumbent government. If the NPP had not won the last elections, would they have been able to invite Dr Opuni for questioning, let’s face it, would they have had the balls to arrest these people? Does that mean there are no corrupt officials in an incumbent administration?

“They are engaged in selectivity because if the government is in place, they will not be able to arrest any official. If they claim they are doing a professional job, they should have the balls to invite or arrest officials of the government; they shouldn’t wait for the government to leave office.”
