National cathedral may threaten our co-existence – Nketia

The commencement of the building of a national cathedral of interdenominational worship in the capital city will threaten our peaceful co-existence, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned.

In his view, this may open the flood gate for other religious groups to make such demands.

Speaking in an interview with Kwabena Agyapong, sit-in host for Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, he quizzed where funding for the project will come from adding, the use of state funds to finance the project is questionable.

President Nana Akufo-Addo on Monday 6, March, 2017 cut sod cut for the commencement of the building of a national cathedral of interdenominational worship in our capital, Accra.

”This project, I am glad to say, is supported by many of our leading figures of faith. It is meant to be a gesture of thanksgiving to the Almighty for the blessings he has showered and continues to shower on our nation,’’ President Akufo-Addo said. But General Mosquito as he is affectionately called said ‘’I want to caution government over this project.

The project can be negative and positive. The president has hinted that the project will be funded by individuals and the leading figures of faith but who are these figures? Are they going to pay for it? Are we going to use state resources? These questions are important to me.

He said we have to tread cautiously. Ghana is a secular state and so we should be careful. If we begin to use state resources to construct a church, and tomorrow another group walks in and petition the president to also construct for them a shrine or a mosque, what are we going to do? We should tread cautiously,’’ he stressed.
