District Police Commander tells police to be neutral at elections.

Abuakwa (Ash), Feb.24, GNA – Mr Emmanuel Akonnor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in-charge of the Abuakwa District has asked

the police in the area to remain neutral during this year’s polls to maintain their reputation in the society. Besides maintaining their reputation he said, their neutrality would enable them to regain their public respect. ASP Akonnor was speaking at his maiden meeting with police personnel under his jurisdiction at Abuakwa on Saturday as part of his tour of the five police stations under his jurisdiction. The police stations are Abuakwa, Nkawie, Akropong, Mankranso and Ahwerewa.

The District Police Commander warned that, he would deal with any police officer who would be found wearing any political party “T” shirt, badge, dress or anything bearing the colours of a political party. ASP Akonnor also advised them against meddling in chieftaincy and land disputes, which he said were potential areas of conflict, telling them that they were law enforcers and not kingmakers. He reminded them of the constitutional provision, which does not permit the police to molest and detain a suspect for more than 48 hours and therefore, asked them not to take the law into their hands. ASP Akonnor also asked them to be very careful when using firearms and appealed to them to work hard to maintain the peace currently prevailing in the country.
