“Akufo-Addo must stop victimising Dr. Opuni” – Yammin

Former Ashanti Regional secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Joseph Yammin is accusing government of orchestrating a personal vendetta against former Chief Executive of Ghana Cocoa Board, Dr. Stephen Opuni.

According to Joseph Yammin, his own checks from reliable sources in government reveal there is no credible charge against the former COCOBOD boss and that, he (Dr. Opuni), is only a subject of hatred.

He is, therefore, calling on President Akufo Addo to show exemplary leadership by condemning the victimisation of Dr. Stephen Opuni.

Yammin was speaking in an interview with www.abusuafmonline.com in response to reports that accounts of the former Chief Executive have been frozen pending investigations into some contracts he signed while serving at COCOBOD.

Dr. Stephen Opuni had his bank accounts put on freeze by government.

The bank accounts were frozen pending the outcome of ongoing investigations by the Economic and Organised Crime Office into alleged procurement irregularities under the former CEO’s tenure.

Dr. Opuni, immediate past Chief Executive of the Board is suspected of superintending over questionable contracts he signed while in office.

Dr Opuni was fired by President Akufo-Addo through a letter signed by the Executive Secretary to the president, Nana Asante Bediatuo which asked him to vacate post not later than 5:00 pm Friday, January 13, 2017.

But Joseph Yammin believes the government is only embarking on a needless witch-hunt of the former COCOBOD Chief Executive.

“Though I am one person who benefited nothing from him as C.E.O of COCOBOD, I think they are just harassing him to gain cheap political points”, he said.

He adds, “Ghanaians nust call a spade a spade and not shy away from the fact that Dr. Opuni has been the NPP’s target even when they were in opposition.”

“How many times hasn’t their own Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong call Dr. Opuni names and even threatened him jail at a time Dr. Opuni’s government was in office,” he asked.

“He has paid his due by serving our mother land and I think the NPP must leave him alone to enjoy his personal life”, Yammin added.
