Make Ghanaian languages core subject.

Accra, Feb. 20, GNA- The Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana TTAG) has endorsed the view that Ghanaian languages be made a core subject in the second cycle institutions.

A Press Release signed by Mr. Alfred Yeboah, President of the Association, and issued in Accra on Friday, said, “we as a country have no secret,” because all official records are written in English, which is foreign, for that reason the study of Ghanaian dialect would “give us our cultural identity”.

Furthermore, the Association said, it would bring about national integration and enhance smooth communication for national development. The Association also expressed concern about low performance of pupils at BECE particularly in the rural areas, implying that the greater majority in the rural communities are lacking quality and reliable education.

This calls for the formulation of a more comprehensive programme for teacher education, it added.

The Association attributed some of the problems to understaffing, communities’ inability to provide accommodation for the few trained teachers posted to the rural area, saying that, communities should help address these issues.

District Assemblies, should make provision of housing. potable water, electricity, among others, their priority projects in order to attract more teachers.
