Chiefs express concern about quality of radio discussions

Awutu-Mankessim (C/R), Feb. 17 GNA – Two Divisional Chiefs in the Central Region have called on the Government not to allow the peace and stability the country is enjoying to be sacrificed on what they described as the “altar of destructive radio discussions”. Nai Kwao Otuo V and Nana Efrim X, members of Awutu and Gomoa Assin Traditional Councils, respectively, were speaking to the Ghana News Agency in separate interviews at Awutu-Mankessim and Apam, at the weekend.

Nai Otuo and Nana Efrim maintained that the looming tension of political discussions on various radio stations in the country, must engage the serious attention of the Government, the Legislature, Judiciary and indeed, all stakeholders.

The two chiefs expressed fear that if steps were not taken to stop such political discussions with their associate phone-in contributions, which in most cases aggravated the situation, they could easily trigger off an endless civil war that could be disastrous.

It is incumbent on the various arms of Government, the Clergy, and the National House of Chiefs to, as a matter of necessity, convene a meeting of Managing Directors of all radio stations and their Editorial Boards, to find a lasting solution to the issue before it got out of hand”, the Chiefs suggested.

Nai Otuo and Nana Effrim further suggested that to avoid inflammatory situations and undesirable tension, political debates and their attendant phone-in-call be stopped until the December elections were over.
