The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has issued a firm warning to all transport stations and branches under its jurisdiction to comply with the newly introduced 15% fare reduction or face punitive actions.
According to the Union’s General Secretary, Godfred Abulbire, certain operators in the Ashanti Region blamed their non-compliance on delayed communication of the directive. However, he emphasized that the Union has taken concrete steps to ensure that all branches fully adhere to the fare adjustment.
Speaking on Channel One’s Newsroom on Saturday, May 24, Abulbire revealed that a follow-up directive had been issued by the Union’s chairman, with clear instructions that any terminal failing to comply by the next day would be sanctioned.
“One of the most effective penalties drivers dislike is being barred from loading passengers. So we believe that’s the measure we need to enforce to ensure full compliance,” Abulbire stated.
The 15% fare reduction follows a drop in fuel prices and is aimed at easing the financial burden on commuters. While some operators have already implemented the new fares, others continue to resist, citing rising operational costs as a challenge
