Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng appears before Appointments Committee – Highlights

The Minister-designate for Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng has made known to the Parliament’s Appointments Committee his intentions for the Science and Technology industry.

When approved as a Minister, Mr. Frimpong Boateng will work towards turning Ghana into a technological hub through the establishment of a business promotions unit at the ministry.

He said Ghana’s technology infrastructure is weak and needs to be addressed through the creation of a critical mass of scientists and engineers.

“I think we need to create a critical mass of scientists because the science and technology infrastructure in Ghana is very weak,” he noted.

According to the former Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, when the science and technology infrastructure is strengthened, engineers will not be overburdened as it brings about shared responsibility among industry players.

“… A car manufacturer will not manufacture a tyre, will not manufacture a windscreen, will not manufacture a wiper motor, and will not manufacture the lights. There are suppliers and so if we don’t have those suppliers – people who can make a bolt for you, it will be very difficult. That is why we think that we should get a critical mass of scientists, technologists, and engineers so that when somebody has an idea, that idea can be transmitted to a lot of people and they can take part in that process.”
