Gbetsile Basic School holds first speech day

Tema, Feb. 7, GNA- The Tema Municipal Director of Education, Mrs Lucy Kwapong, has appealed to Chiefs, opinion leaders and religious leaders to help establish education Endowment Funds in their communities to assist needy but brilliant children.

She also advised them to pay visits to schools in their communities to have a fair idea not only of their wards performance but know the problems in the school and see how best they can help them. These were contained in a speech read on her behalf at the first speech and prize giving day ceremony of the Gbetsile TMA Basic School in Tema, on Friday.

Gbetsile is a farming village near the First Battalion of Infantry, Michel Camp.

Mrs Kwapong noted with concern that while some parents were anxious to see to the success of their children’s education others still thought education is free and so they have no hand in promoting it.

She advised parents on the need to take keen interest in their children’s education and participate fully in their school’s management committee’s and Parent Teacher Association’s activities.

She advised children to reciprocate investment in their education by being disciplined, dedicated and law-abiding in all activities. The Head teacher, Mr Winfred Bekui, said the school, started in 1985 with 85 pupils in primary one to six, now has 300 pupils in the primary and 75 in the Junior Secondary School (JSS).

He mentioned some of the school’s problems as lack of school library and a block for the JSS saying the school has only one block for the JSS and this had made some of the children to study under structures made with palm branches.

The Assembly member of the area, Mr Samuel Alenge, advised parents to assist their children to acquire quality education. He said for the past four years the area had been without potable water and people had to walk two miles to nearby towns to fetch water.
