Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Centre Burgled

Barely five days after President J.A. Kufuor and German Chancellor Gerhard Shroeder jointly inaugurated the multi-billion cedi Kofi Annan Peace Keeping Centre in Accra, some thieves executed a daring attempt to cart away constructional materials from there.

The Heritage sources said a group of four men, including a private security officer stationed at the Centre, last Wednesday night, at about 8pm, loaded over 100 bags of cement, two bundles of ? iron rods and two bundles of ? inch iron rods into a KIA truck with registration number GR 3418N and nearly became rich over night.

However, luck eluded them when a Good Samaritan informed the Nungua Police who promptly arrived there to effect their arrests.

The alleged thieves, whose names are being withheld to enable the police conduct their investigations, initially pretended they were going to offload pure water but reversed into the main yard of the building when no one was looking and started loading the building materials into their truck.

A source at the Nungua Police Station confirmed the story but directed this reporter to the Commander stationed at Teshie.

When Commander Cobbina was got on the phone after several hours waiting at the station while he attended a welfare meeting, he also directed this reporter to the Public Relations Department at the Police Headquarters, as he was yet to receive any report on the incident as at 10:30am last Thursday.

It was not clear at press time when the thieves would be charged to court.
