National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team member, Nii Kpakpo Samao, has come to the defence of the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) following the controversial arrest of New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi.
Speaking on ‘The Big Issue’ on Channel One TV, private legal practitioner and NDC communications team member, Nii Kpakpo Samoa, dismissed concerns raised by sections of the public over how the operation was carried out.
“This was not a covert or violent raid,” Mr Samoa said. “The officers involved were clearly identified, wearing marked security attire, and equipped with body cameras. Everything was done in a professional and transparent manner.”
Footage of the incident has been circulating online, with some Ghanaians expressing discomfort over the perceived use of force. However, Mr Samoa insists the video tells a different story.
“When you look at the videos, I didn’t see anyone who was not clearly identified as national security personnel. They stated who they were and why they were there,” he noted.
He added that the officers informed those present about the nature of the arrest and made efforts to avoid any public disruption, even allowing supporters of Mr Kumi to accompany him to the NIB office.
“So where lies the problem?” he asked. “Is it that national security cannot conduct raids or arrests? Or is it just that people have a problem when it doesn’t favour their side politically?”
The arrest of Adenta Kumi has sparked debate across Ghana’s political landscape, with some accusing the NIB of targeting political opponents. The NIB has yet to comment publicly on the incident or the reasons behind the arrest.
The development comes amid growing tensions ahead of the 2024 general elections, with political parties increasingly trading accusations over state security and political interference.
