Health officials seize expired canned tomatoes at Donkorkrom

The Food and Hygiene Unit from the Environmental Health Department has seized boxes of expired tin tomatoes products from 17 retail market women in the Donkorkrom market in the Eastern Region.

Checks on the 70 gram tin tomatoes products revealed they expire after January, 2017. Officials of the Unit at Donkorkrom in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District explained that they had a tip-off that the market women were selling the products at low prices compared to others in the market.

The operation was led by Joseph Kwahu, head of the Unit. The market women were selling five of the 70 grams tin tomatoes at GH¢4, an amount that raised suspicion. Five boxes taken from the market women had all expired.

The environmental officials intend to seek court orders for confiscation. They urged market women and consumers to check the expiry date of products before buying them. They say food poison can result from the consumption of the expired product.
