Achiase teachers boycott classes

Achiase (Ash), Jan 23, GNA – Teachers at Achiase near Ntobroso, in the Atwima district of the Ashanti Region, have been urged to consider the fate of their pupils and return to the classroom.

Mr Eddy Obeng-Darko, District Director of Education, made the appeal on Thursday, at a meeting with the chiefs and people of the town to find a solution to the teachers boycott.

The Teachers left the town in protest against the smoking of Indian hemp on the school premises and defecating in the classrooms. According to the Teachers, the drug addicts also smeared the walls of the classrooms and the blackboards with human excreta.

Mr Obeng-Darko described the practice as uncivilised and said it did not only have a negative effect on teaching and learning but also promoted indiscipline.

He warned that the school would be closed down if the community failed to curb the activities of the offenders, which did not promote quality education.
