Publish preliminary findings of La gas explosion – Fire Service told

Personnel of the Ghana Fire Service must as a matter of urgency make their initial findings into the causes of Thursday’s gas explosion at La public as a way of educating Ghanaians on preventive measures, Nana Yaw Akwada, Executive Secretary of the Bureau of Public Safety, has said.

According to him, at this period Ghanaians are celebrating Christmas, the frequency with which they will troop to fuel stations to fill their cylinders will be high, hence the need to identify potential disasters and prevent them from breaking out.

His comments follow a gas explosion at Trade Fair Junction, near the office of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) at La Dadekotopon, on Thursday December 22, which killed six persons and injured 35.

The explosion was said to have occurred between 6pm and 7pm after a gas cylinder at a nearby gas station started leaking. Similarly, there was a fire outbreak at Asawase in Kumasi, destroying several properties.

Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Friday December 23, Mr Akwada said: “That location has become a potential crime scene and so the police will do their investigation. If they rule out any act of criminality, then the Fire Service will take over the place.

“We will appeal to the Fire Service to organise a press conference and let the public know their preliminary findings, because the frequency of people trooping to gas filling stations will be very high at this time of the Christmas season.”

He added: “With regards to the Asawase incident, the public will need education because we are entering the dry season.”
