Court remands three armed robbers in custody

Kumasi, Jan. 20, GNA – A Kumasi circuit court on Tuesday remanded three armed robbers, who allegedly robbed a cabbie at gunpoint in prison custody.
The three – Yaw Sarfo 22, Mike Sarpong, 19, and Kwabena Charles alias “Striker, 28 – whose pleas were not taken, will re-appear on February 14, 2004.
Police Chief Inspector Joseph Odigya told the court that at about 2330 hours on January 17, this year, Sarfo, who feigned to have been attacked by thugs, threw himself on the main Bekwai-Obuasi road near the Parks and Gardens as if he needed assistance.
He said one Simons Kofi Mensah, a taxi driver on reaching where Sarfo was lying on the road, unsuspectingly stopped his vehicle and just as he was about to get out of his vehicle to assist, Charles and Sarpong emerged from a hideout wielding guns and ordered the driver to surrender the car or be shot dead.
Chief Inspector Odigya said the driver fearing for his life, obeyed and gave the car to them and took to his heels. He said while running a military cum police patrol team saw him and asked him about what was chasing him and after narrating the incident to the team, they gave the robbers a hot chase and caught up with them at the Santasi roundabout.
Chief Inspector Odigya said the robbers sensing danger, abandoned the car and ran into the bush but were pursued and arrested and handed over to the Buffalo Unit of the Ghana Police Service. Meanwhile, the taxi had been retrieved.
