Kibi, Jan 19, GNA – The government of Ghana has order for 70 cinema vans from Spain for the Information Services Department to enable it to perform its functions effectively.
Nana Ohene Ntow, government spokesman for economic affairs, said this on Friday at a Peoples’ Assembly, in a reaction to a suggestion made by the Chief of Kyebi, Nana Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah concerning the department.
Nana Ntow said the vans would augment the current stock for the dissemination of information to make functional the government’s policy of participatory democracy.
The government spokesman said government’s decision on the exploitation of bauxite in the area would be informed by inputs from the Okyeman Council.
In a reaction to this, Nana Danquah, who is also the Abontendomhene of Kyebi, explained that the Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, was not against the exploitation of the mineral but was only concerned about safeguards that should be considered before any such project was executed.
He said the Okyenhene based his concerns on the plight and experiences of people living in mining areas in Ghana and in South Africa.
The East Akyem District Chief Executive, Mr Emmanuel Asihene said the assembly had started schools rehabilitation programme, under which classrooms had been rehabilitated or constructed and furniture supplied. He said out of the 11,600 junior secondary school students in the district, 5,900 lacked furniture and the assembly had ordered 4,000 mono desks out of which 2,000 were ready for distribution.
The assembly, he said, was sponsoring 190 teacher trainees and 35 senior secondary school students including the 52-year-old woman at Akyem Sekere Secondary School to complete their courses.
