U/W: Residents of Karni boycott election

Barely thirty minutes to the close of polls in the ongoing general elections, not a single voter has cast his/her ballot in the Karni township in the Upper West Region.

The action by the residents of the town is in protest of the town’s name being dropped from the name of the district.

What used to be the Lambussie Karni District was one of the districts created in 2008, and is located in the North Western corner of the Upper West Region of Ghana.

Over the last 6 years, the government has referred to the District as Lambussie much to the chagrin of the people of Karni.

EIB’s correspondent based in the town, Bamie Ahmed reported that some residents have invoked curses on anyone who turns up to vote, a development that has put fear in the electorate.

The situation has left officials of the Electoral Commission and party officials in the two polling stations in the town having a holiday as they’ve had no activities to do since morning.
