WATER SHORTAGE

Aboabo (Eastern Region) 22 Jan. ’98

A severe water shortage has hit Aboabo and its surrounding villages in the Fanteakwa district. Consequently, the people of Nyedie-Krobo, Asrebuso, Amiawa and Aburaso have to wake up at dawn to walk for about four kilometres to the Aboabo stream to search for water. A spokesman for the people, Mr. M.E. Donkor who disclosed this to newsmen during a visit to the town at the weekend, said the situation had adversely affected the social and economic life of the people. The headteacher of the Aboabo local authority primary school, Mr. Samuel Anim Boahen, said the situation had interrupted normal school hours as both teachers ad pupils report to school almost three hours late. He said the school may be closed if interim measures are not taken to provide the people with water. The inhabitants have appealed to the government to provide them with hand-dug wells for which they are prepared to bear the cost to alleviate their suffering. gri
