Agona (Ash), Jan 9, GNA – Habitat for Humanity, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) concerned with the provision of houses for the poor, has helped 141 people in the Afigya-Sekyere district to own houses under a special building assistance programme since 1997.
Mr Kwaku Appau, Agona Affiliate Chairman of Habitat, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Agona on Tuesday that 89 of the beneficiaries were from Agona, 46 from Kona and six from Tano-Odumase.
He said Habitat assisted the beneficiaries with building materials, such as roofing sheets, iron rods and cement to the tune of one billion cedis in addition to the free plots.
The beneficiaries who were mostly traders and farmers provided only labour, Mr Appau said, adding that, the programme would be replicated in other districts to ease the accommodation problems in the country.
He said selecting the beneficiaries was purely on merit based upon the individual’s application but added that it was restricted to the district.
Mr Appau commended the District Assembly for providing two boreholes fitted with pumps at the Agona Affiliate but appealed for a school and the extension of electricity to the settlement.
