Youth To ‘Smoke The Peace Pipe’ With Chief

Gomoa Okyereko (Central Region) 13 Jan.,

The youth of Okyereko have decided to use this year’s “Akwambo” festival to ‘smoke the peace pipe’ with their Odikro after a four-year dispute. The dispute which stemmed from allegations that the Odikro had misappropriated funds belonging to the town, had resulted in the freeezing of funds to the town by the Gomoa District Assembly. Nana Kwame Baah, III, Omankrado of Okyereko who announced this at a meeting with youth leaders, said the reconciliation gesture could attract funds from the assembly for the construction of a 12 million-cedi day-care centre for the town. He appealed to all Okyereko citizens to support activities lined up for the festival which begins on January 16, to affirm the settlement of the dispute. “The time has come for the people to smoke the peace pipe with their chief by burying their differences and opening a new chapter that would enhance the socio-economic development of the town.” Nana Baah announced a special development levy of 5,000 cedis per resident and 10,000 per non-resident citizens towards the day-care centre, KVIP and Electrification projects. He said the peace initiative would restore the confidence reposed in the town by both the Gomoa District Security Council and the Regional Minister, Mr.. Kojo Yankah. The people will launch a keep fit club on January 24, to round off the festival.
