Gonjas to hit street over Yagbonwura’s new position

A group calling itself Concerned Youth of the Gonja Traditional Area has condemned the appointment of King and Overlord of Gonja Kingdom Yagbonwura Tuntumba Boresa I as president of the Northern Region House of Chiefs.

The Region House of Chiefs last week elected and swore in the Yagbonwura as President to succeed the paramount chief of the Mamprusi Traditional area, Naa Mahamai Sheriga Bohagu after his four-year tenure of office.

But the group and some residents of the Gonjaland are challenging the competence of the Yagbonwura and are to protest to compel an overturn of the decision.

Speaking exclusively to Ultimate News, leader of the group Mantowura Alhaji Abass Danbga described the Yagbonwura as a “trouble maker” whose actions has caused deep divisions among Gonjas in the area.

According to the group, the Yagbonwura needless and bias interference in many chieftaincy disputes in the area has continued to increase tensions accusing him of creating parallel chiefs in the Gonja kingdom including Bole and Damango traditional areas.

The group says the “incompetent” Yagbonwura is unfit for the position because even in his own jurisdiction, he has failed to adjudicate without troubles chieftaincy and land disputes brought before him.

They mentioned the relaxed Bunkprugu dispute and the volatile Abudu and Andani conflict as some of the complicated issues the King lacks ‘knowledge and insight’ to preside over.

In July this year more than 30 people were reportedly killed in a renewed chieftaincy conflicts in two different traditional areas- Bole and Kpembe.

The group which had earlier implicated the Yagbonwura in all these instances said there would be chaos in the region if the decision is not overturned.
