Fire guts Kayayei wooden shacks in Afful Nkwanta

Wooden structures serving as places of abode for some itinerant female porters (Kayayei) and scrub dealers at Afful Nkwanta, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, have been razed by fire, destroying several other properties.

The inferno occurred on Tuesday at about 4:30pm.

An eyewitness who narrated the incident to ClassFMonline.com said the structures were home to about 400 Kayayei and scrub dealers.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by embers of charcoal left after cooking.

Meanwhile, personnel of the Ghana Fire Service are battling the blaze.
