Nduom Goes Independent

Paa Kwesi Nduom, the Energy Minister, is to contest the 2004 Parliamentary elections as an independent candidate despite serving in the NPP administration and in spite of the fact that he is a registered member of the Convention People’s Party.

Nduom whose decision to serve in the NPP government has displeased many Nkrumahsist will contest the Komenda-Edina-Eguaa-Abrim parliamentary seat, which he lost to NDC’s Ato Quarshie, in the 2000 elections, on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party.

Nduom told a local FM station that his decision to contest as a parliamentary candidate was influenced by the demands of his constituents.

“I am doing it with the concentration on me as an individual. What I can do and what I have been able to do. It is also based on what people appreciate as a CPP member working hand in hand with the NPP government. People have liked that. They really appreciate that and have come to me to say we want you to represent us in parliament because you can interact effectively with every one regardless of their background.

“The lesson there is simply that what people want is an improvement in their lot, they want to hand responsibility to those who can do their jobs and are not particularly bothered about the sectional differences of whether you belong to NDC or NPP.”
