Agona (Ash), Dec 26, GNA – The Agona Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday fined a 35 year-old-farmer, Kwame Appiah of Benim, near Asante-Mampong, one million cedis for assaulting two Police Constables stationed at Asante-Mampong.
He pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and assaulting public officers and would serve a one-year prison term in default. Appiah is also to pay 500,000 cedis to each of the two assaulted Police Constables as compensation.
The Court remanded three accomplices, Kwabena Adu, Kwadwo Boateng and Kofi Nti, who pleaded not guilty on charges of causing unlawful harm and assaulting public officers, until December 30.
A fifth accused person, Peter Brenah, was, however, granted a Police enquiry bail in the sum of five million cedis to re-appear on December 30 while Kofi Sarpong alias “Cherico”, a sixth accomplice, is on the run.
Police Inspector Francis Walter Fiator told the Court that one Kwaku Marfo from Benim on June 4, this year, reported a case of unlawful damage to the Police.
He said Constables Osman Agbaglo and Kofi Dzikunu were, therefore, detailed to effect the arrest of Appiah.
Inspector Fiator said the constables on reaching Benim, attempted to arrest Appiah but the other accused persons emerged from nowhere, attacked and severely assaulted the constables and ran into the bush along with Appiah, who had then been handcuffed.
He said they later resurfaced from their hideout to Benim and were rounded up in a dawn swoop.
