For refusing to show up in court yesterday, the Electoral Commission (EC) has been ordered to pay GH¢ 1,000 as fine.
Two separate High Courts hearing the cases between the People National Convention (PNC) and the National Democratic Party (NDP) against the EC on their disqualification fined the electioneering body GH¢500 each, for failing to appear before them.
Lead Counsel for the EC, Thaddeus Sory, had to rush through the various courts to represent the Commission as the NDP, PNC and APC cases were all heard on Tuesday.
General Secretary of PNC, Atik Mohammed, who blamed the EC for landing itself in the mess guessed the various cases filed by the aggrieved parties who are seeking reversal of their disqualification caused their failure to show up in court when the case was mentioned.
On Asempa FM’s yesterday afternoon, ‘Ekosii Sen’, Atik said the EC should have been fined more than that because GH¢500 is too small for the commission to realize its mistakes.
According to him, the court they have fined the EC more for Ghanaians to know that they are intentionally wasting time and causing financial loss to the state.
He said the commission could have avoided the situation they found themselves if they allowed consensus building to work. The high court has ordered both the EC and PNC to submit their written statement within 48 hours.
