Atik Mohammed, General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC) has said the posture of the Electoral Commission boss, Madam Charlotte Osei, against the 13 disqualified political parties, looks like she is punishing them for some wrongs they did against her years back.
He thinks the she is abusing the independence of the commission and doing things without recourse to the major stakeholders (political parties), a situation he said gives him cause to worry.
According to him, the numerous court suits against the EC shows that she does what pleases her at the expense of the whole country’s democracy and happiness.
Atik pointed it out that the blatant refusal on her part to point out their mistakes to them for corrections and her wish to appeal a case won against the commission makes him believe that she wants to win every decision of hers no matter what.
“We know time is of essence, so we thought the EC boss would have relaxed things after PPP won their case and call all parties to correct their mistakes, but you could see that she is determined so instead she is appealing the case when it is only one month to elections”, Atik observed.
“I’m not saying Afari Gyan was a saint but I do not remember him doing things shambolically this way, to create uncertainties around an elections one month which has to do with misunderstanding”, he posited.
The PNC General Secretary disclosed that the picky nature of doing things by the EC boss has made IPAC meetings not interesting to attend any longer, adding that the cases at court could have been handled at that level.
“There are issues there at EC. I can see disharmony among the other commissioners. It may not be very obvious but there is the look of frustration among them when they appear”, he stressed.
Her posture, Atik Mohammed underscored, does not enhance cooperation and consensus building in Ghana’s democratic dispensation.
