The vice-presidential nominee of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Brigitte Dzogbenuku, has expressed her disappointment with the National Peace Council for its silence on the disqualification of 13 presidential aspirants from the December polls.
The PPP’s flag bearer, Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, was among those disqualified over certain anomalies and infractions.
The PPP has prayed an Accra High Court to have the Electoral Commission reinstate Dr Nduom.
Speaking to Class News, after her press conference in Accra to respond to calls from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for Dr Nduom to disclose his source of funding for his campaign, Ms Dzogbenuku said the silence of the Peace Council was surprising.
“If that is their idea of keeping the peace, sometimes keeping quiet will not keep the peace, so, yes I am surprised that they are silent, I’m disappointed, in fact, in their silence, and this is where I go off track a bit. The problem in this country is people don’t do what they ought to do and that’s why we are where we are. They should do what they ought to do, we don’t have to go and point out to them their work. They know why they are institutions and why they exist, so, they should do what they ought to do,” Ms Dzogbenuku added.
“Everybody has the right to run for the presidential election and people should need to feel free not to be threatened by using the government agencies and security agencies to intimidate them. We are not in isolation, if this is being done to us, it can be done to any other party in opposition.”
