Explosion kills one at steel factory

One person was reported dead and seven others in critical condition following an explosion Saturday night at Sentuo Steel Ltd., a Chinese steel manufacturing company in the Tema Heavy Industrial Area.

The deceased was said to be among eight workers, including a Chinese national, reportedly caught in a blaze after the steel smelting equipment they were working with exploded, splashing the hot liquid on them.

They were rushed to the Tema General Hospital where health professionals tried to stabilize their conditions.

However, two of them were referred to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra where one of them was reported to have given up the ghost soon after admission.

Three out of the eight workers were receiving treatment at the Accident Unit of the Tema General Hospital but two of them have been treated and discharged.

A medical doctor at the hospital told DAILY GUIDE that the injured were rushed to the facility at about 8:30 pm Saturday.

According to him, after examining their conditions, two of them had to be transferred to the military hospital owing to the seriousness of the injuries.

Some of the workers who spoke to DAILY GUIDE indicated that the incident occurred when they went on a night shift.

According to them, the explosion happened in the arc furnace where the workers were busily melting metals to manufacture iron products.

A visit to the Accident Unit by DAILY GUIDE revealed that the three injured male workers had some burns on their bodies.

However, management of the steel manufacturing company is yet to comment on the incident which has left most of the workers in fear and panic.
