Traders angry at AMA over filthy Accra

Traders and commuters in and around Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra have registered their resentment at the way refuse is being dumped on the streets at night.

According to them, the situation has become unbearable and equally making life difficult for them.

The development, they lamented, was affecting their businesses as several of their customers no longer find it comfortable to patronise their wares.

Speaking in an interview with Today, some commuters who were seen hurriedly boarding vehicles to leave the scene expressed anger at city authorities for the unhygienic nature of the area, a place regarded by many as the heart of Accra.

A trader, Grace Nyarko, pleaded with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to immediately come to their aid by helping to kerb what she termed “unpleasant and uncontrollable” smell which poses serious health hazards to commuters.

“We pay taxes to the AMA but what do we see here, every day when it’s around 9:00 p.m., loads of refuse are heaped in front of where we do our business. This drives away patrons from doing business with us. This is uncalled for and does not depict Accra as the national capital,” phone dealer, Stephen Mainoo, lamented.

A fruit seller, Florence Mensah, also bemoaned the increasing rate of filth at the business centre which, he said, was collapsing their businesses.
