Newspapers in local languages needed

Assin Foso (C/R), Dec 17, GNA- The Assin district co-ordinator of the Non Formal Education Division (NFED), Mr James Wilberforce Biney, on Tuesday called for the re-introduction of newspapers in local languages as a way of keeping rural communities in particular, abreast on national issues.

Addressing NFED facilitators for the Breku and Akropong zones at separate meetings, Mr Biney said in the past community-based newspapers like the “nkwantabisa” enabled people who could not read English to rely on them for an update of events in and outside the country. Mr Biney said reintroduction of such newspapers would complement teaching and learning in the functional literacy classes.

He repeated warnings to facilitators to refrain from turning their classes into political arenas, and to focus their attention towards attaining the objectives for which the NFED was established.
