Politicians must avoid divisive rhetoric – GIGS

The Ghana Institute of Governance and Security (GIGS) has urged the political parties and their supporters to be measured and step back from divisive rhetoric.

Mr. David Agbe, the Executive Secretary, said it was important for everybody to put the unity, peace and stability of the nation ahead of any other interest or consideration.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kumasi, he said, nobody should do anything to tear the people apart in their desperate bid for power.

Exciting ethnic and religious passions for political gain, he warned, was dangerous and was not a right thing to do.

The expectation, was that parties would use their election campaign to help voters to make the correct decision on the voting day.

That, he indicated, called for proper articulation of their development vision to bring progress and transform the socio-economic situation of the population.

He underlined the need for political maturity – tolerance and accommodation, saying, “the beauty of multi-party democracy lies in the ability to be tolerant of divergent views”.

Mr. Agbe advised all to conduct themselves well and get right with the law – they should educate themselves on the electoral laws and uphold them to remove needless tension and confusion.

Again, they should accept to use the appropriate channels to resolve any misunderstandings or grievances, he added.
