NDP goes to court today

The National Democratic Party (NDP) is set to file its writ in the court by close of day today, to challenge the disqualification of their flagbearer Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings from contesting the December 7th Polls, General Secretary Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong has confirmed.

According to him, the 24-hour ultimatum given to the Electoral Commission (EC) by their lawyers has elapsed and the Commission’s defiance gives them no choice but to take a legal action against it.

“We are in contact with our lawyers and all necessary papers for the writ is getting ready. I assure you that close to mid-day we will be filing. We are going to court, it is necessary, our democracy needs it”, the General Secretary told Joy FM in an interview on Friday.

Lawyers for the NDP on Tuesday gave the Electoral Commission (EC) a 24-hour ultimatum to rescind its decision to disqualify them from contesting the December 7 presidential election or face them in Court.

The lawyers contended that the EC had no power to disqualify their client’s presidential candidate, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, from contesting the December 7 polls, a reason for the ultimatum.

Alhaji Frimpong during the interview harbored the belief that reasons for their flagbearer’s disqualification is not properly established in law, so they are upbeat about it that the court will reverse the EC’s decision.

He, therefore, accused the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of being behind what is happening to NDP, adding that the presence of their flagbearer will give them a chill in their spines.

When asked what their action would be if they lose the case, Alhaji Frimpong, said they will still remain in the political scene and contribute their quota to the development of the democratic process of the nation.

“By then, the entire nation would have been enlightened properly on matters key to the development of democratic process, so we will still contribute our quota”, the General Secretary said.
