Judges reach agreement with gov’t over 10% pay rise

Ghana’s government has reached an agreement with some lower court judges in the country who threatened to strike last week over salary related issues.

At a crunch meeting last Thursday, the government resolved to address the issues of the judges by the end of October, a senior member of the judges revealed to 3News but declined to give further details.

Members of the Association of Magistrates and Judges of Ghana issued a 10-day ultimatum to government to implement a 10-per cent pay increment by September 30 or they will embark on a strike.

Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, according to sources, approved the 10 per cent increment for the judges after discussions but its implementation has since delayed.

The Finance Ministry was accused of not adhering to the directive from the Chief of Staff.

According to sources, no communication has gone on between the Ministry and the judges after the approval, prompting the judges to issue the threat.

But on Thursday October 6, the representatives of the judges and the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana met over the issue at which the government was said to have promised to address the issue by the end of the month.

3News sources say the judges have also decided to suspend their threat to strike in view of the assurance given them by the government.
