Parliamentary Press Corps inducted into Office

Accra, Nov 28, GNA- Mr. Peter Ala Adjetey, the Speaker, on Friday called for cooperation and good faith between Parliament and members of the Parliamentary Press Corps to ensure that the interest of the public is served.

He said there should be no “we and they” attitude in the way members of the press and members of parliament perceive each other since both parties are involved in the same business of rendering services to the public.

The Speaker was speaking at the induction into office of a seven-member executive of the Parliamentary Press Corp.

Mr Justice George Aryeetey, a High Court Judge administered the Oath of Office to the members made up of Mr. Edwin Arthur of the Independent Newspaper as Dean, Mr. Abdulai Gariba of the Ghana News Agency as Vice Dean and Mr Eben Owusu-Ansah, Information Services Department, as Secretary.

Others are Mr. Mark Anthony Vinorkor, the Ghanaian Times, Treasurer, Mr. Samuel Ankamah, the Daily Guide, Organiser, Mr. Stephen Adane Danquah, GBC, as an Executive Member and Ms Nelly Abbey, Parliamentary Digest, Assistant Secretary.

Mr Ala Adjetey said although Parliament wields a lot of power to deal with members of the press when they misconduct themselves, the leadership of the House have decided that the “transgression” of the press should not be brought to the floor of the house but be dealt with in a peaceful manner because the press and parliament are both working for the development of the nation.

Mr. Arthur commended Parliament for establishing the Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament, saying it has helped journalists to discharge their duties with despatch.

Mr. Bright Blewu, General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA), had earlier introduced the new executive to the leadership of the house.
