Exotic Exhibition of Asafo Flags from Southern Ghana opens in Toronto

On Sunday, September 18, 2016, the Second Floor of the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) in Toronto-the largest multicultural city in Canada, was turned into a Ghanaian cultural durbar when chiefs and queen mothers from the Toronto Ghanaian community in their rich regalia massively graced the opening of the ROM’s new exhibition dubbed ‘Art, Honour, and Ridicule: Asafo Flags from Southern Ghana.’

The performance of the Borborfante Asafo group put together by Messers Donkoh and Wilberforce of the Mfantseman Cultural Association of Toronto during the opening of ceremony was fantastic!

Also present at the ceremony were Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada-Dr Sulley Gariba, the Consul General of Ghana in Toronto-Mr. John Bosco and their staffs; and the Executives of Ghanaian Canadian Association of Ontario (GCAO) who worked tirelessly to ensure the wonderful attendance of Ghanaians at the function.

The large gathering was welcomed to the museum by its director of world culture, Mr Chin. The Royal Ontario Museum is a museum of art, world culture and natural history in Toronto, Canada. It is one of the largest museums in North America and the largest in Canada. It attracts over one million visitors every year!

The Asafo Flags of Southern Ghana which is a collection by Silvia Forni, a curator (African Arts and Cultures) at ROM will be on display at the museum for the public from September, 2016 till March, 2017 to commemorate Ghana’s 60th Independence Anniversary.
