Mr.. Solomon K. Obeng, Director-General of the Ghana Education Service has called for collaboration between parents, teachers and the community to ensure the proper education of children. He said education men as more than merely imparting knowledge and skills to the individual and stressed the need to include character-building and the instilling of societal values to help child develop their personalities. Mr.. Obeng was speaking at the silver jubilee anniversary and prize-giving day of the Damongo Secondary School (DASS) at Damongo yesterday, under the theme “Community participation in education as a tool for sustainable development.” he said for any meaningful and successful educational programme, moral training from parents should be complemented by a hard working and resourceful teacher with a mission. He said moral values would help the student to acquire the right attitude and virtues such as honesty, hard work, punctuality, fellow-feeling and patriotism and called on students to avoid unnecessary confrontation with school authorities. Mr. Gilbert Iddi, Northern Regional Minister who was the guest of honour urged the staff, parent-teacher association and old students association to continue to promote quality education in the area. He called on teachers to promote science education since examination results indicate that it has not been pursued and handled efficiently in the region. The assistant headmistress of the school, Ms. Christina Tampie regretted that academic results of the school has fallen due to inadequate qualified teachers, lack of teaching aids, and classroom facilities and inappropriate boarding facilities. She appealed for the construction of a girls dormitory the rehabilitation of facilities and the provision of teachers bungalows. Mr.. T.A. Mahama, president of the old students association said members have assisted the school in resolving conflicts between students and staff which has led to the proud record of never experiencing a strike, closure, or destruction of school property by the students. He said they have also donated books worth 10 million cedis to the school. An appeal for funds yielded 5.8 million cedis.
