Akatsi NDC in disarray

Information reaching DAILY GUIDE indicates that the Akatsi South Constituency branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region is in serious trouble.

The party, which is the most dominant in the district, is on the verge of losing that dominance following the increasing affection for an independent parliamentary candidate.

This show of affection came to light when the candidate, Evans Gadeto Djikunu, inaugurated his campaign office ahead of the December 7 general.

The event, which was initially scheduled to be a brief one, turned into a mammoth rally which attracted several residents, chiefs, clergy and opinion leaders from all parts of the constituency. The new edifice, which is located at Akatsi-Tatorme, was inaugurated with a lot of fanfare as some NDC party faithful praised Mr Djikunu, a legal practitioner, for his initiative. His supporters also joined him in a procession that brought commercial activities in the Akatsi Township to a standstill.

Lawyer Djikunu filed to contest Edward Doe Adjaho, current speaker of parliament, during the primaries of the NDC prior to the 2012 elections. He was disqualified for what many in the constituency described as a controversial decision.

This made him decide to go to the December parliamentary poll as an independent candidate.

With barely three months to the general election, the legal practitioner, who is making his third attempt for the MP slot, is confident of winning the support of the electorate to represent them in parliament.”

Addressing his supporters in an atmosphere of jubilation, Lawyer Evans Djikunu called for unity to ensure a resounding victory.

He saw the ruling NDC leaders in Akatsi South as being selective, greedy and selfish, saying they don’t have the constituents at heart but their personal interests alone.

Representatives of some political parties, including Japhet Ametame, parliamentary candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) for the area and some constituency executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), notably Kofitse Nyahe, were present at the ceremony.

The “Dufia” of Akatsi, Torgbui Letsa Korba ll, in a speech read on his behalf, lamented the rise in motor accidents and murder cases in the area and cautioned the youth in particular to desist from careless riding and financial inducements by politicians to cause violence.

A new group called Friends of Gadeto Djikunu (FOGAD) Welfare Association was also instituted to cater for the welfare of his supporters.
