Safety rules don’t apply to presidential motorcades – Police

The Commander of the Motor Traffic Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong has announced that road safety rules are not applicable to presidential motorcades.

According to him, motorcades are free to run at any speed as far as the presidential convoy is concerned. He explained that presidential and high officials’ convoys are permitted by road safety rules to avoid road attackers.

ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong speaking to Onua FM cautioned road users to make way for presidential motorcades to avoid road accidents. He added that anyone who refuses to adhere to warnings of siren from motorcades violates the road safety rules.

“Anyone who follows or joins presidential convoys illegitimately also contravenes the road laws as well,” he underscored.

The MTTD commander’s comments come on the heels of an accident over the weekend involving the convoy of Ghana’s vice president, Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur. An unregistered saloon car which failed to heed the signal of the vice president’s motorcade crashed into one of the vehicles at Gomoa Adam, near Esarkyir junction on the Winneba – Cape Coast road causing it to sumersault.

At least three occupants including journalists were injured. ACP Patrick Adusei Sarpong therefore appealed to the general public to respect the sound of sirens anytime on the road to avoid road accidents.
