20 year-old attempts beheading friend for rituals arrested

A 19-year-old Junior High School (JHS) student was nearly beheaded by his friend at Tema Newtown in the Greater Accra Region over the weekend.

Master Daniel Norteye, who decided to pass the night at his friend’s house, woke up with a knife at his throat.

Charles Ashitey, alias Zaga, 20 years old, who is believed to have planned to use Master Norteye for rituals, convinced his friend to pass the night with him on the said day.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, Tema Police Regional Public Relations Officer confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday.

ASP Obeng said Ashitey attempted beheading his friend who was spending the night with him after they had returned from a dance rehearsal at about01:00 hours.

At about 04:00 hours when the victim was asleep, he felt a sharp pain on his neck and woke up to see Ashitey holding a knife and cutting his throat.

He struggled with him, resulting in him sustaining multiple cuts in his palm and abdomen.

The Police PRO indicated that the victim who managed to escape with the knife rushed to his aunt’s house and a complaint was lodged at the Tema Newtown Police Station after which he received treatment at the Tema General Hospital.

Ashitey was arrested and handed over to the Police by residents.

A search in his room revealed a decomposing beheaded snake, eggshells, powder which has been sprinkled in the room and a wooden doll.

ASP Obeng said the suspect who claimed ownership of the items said the dead snake belonged to a friend adding that he pleaded with his friend to give it to him instead of eating it.

Ashitey also told the police that he did not know what came over him to attempt beheading his friend.
