Twenty-seven shop-owners in the La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA), have been arrested and fined by a joint Police and Sanitation Taskforce, for not participating in the last National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise, on Saturday, August 6.
Speaking to Ghana News Agency, the Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Mr Joseph Quacoe said the shop owners were doing business whilst the exercise which begun at 630am was on-going.
He said he was however impressed with the way people participated in the exercise, especially the Madina Area Pentecostal Church members who desilted drains along the Zongo-Junction and the Social Welfare areas.
LaNMMA provided sanitary tools and protective clothing while the Alliance Waste Company supported the exercise with two compaction trucks.
Mr Franklin Anku commended the Church and appealed to the other faith based organisations to emulate the example.
Apostle Anthony Kwabena Ahalivor, who led the members of the Church, said the mission had embarked on an educational campaign on sanitation, to sensitise residents about good sanitation practices to keep their environment clean at all times.
