HODs asked to show interest in Assembly projects

Akropong-Akwapim (E/R), Nov 6, GNA – The Presiding Member of Akwapim North District Assembly, Mr Albert O. Larbi has complained about passive attitude shown by heads of decentralised departments to programmes of the assembly.

He said often the Departmental Heads, who were expected to serve as technical advisers to the District Assembly, did not attend its programmes.

Mr Larbi suggested to the District Coordinating Director to form an association of departmental heads in the district and use it as a forum to mobilize them to show more interest in the activities of the Assembly.

He was speaking at the launch of the African Youth Alliance (AYA) District Project for the District by the National Population Council at Akropong-Akwapim on Wednesday.

Launching the project Mr Kofi Abinah, Eastern Regional Population Officer, said the project was being sponsored by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation of USA and has the youth as its target.

The project aims at developing advocacy strategies to effect policy change, integration of reproductive health into training programmes for both in and out of school youth, reduction of the incidence of reproductive tract infections and HIV/AIDS.

Mr Abinah said the project would also build the capacity of the participants to ensure sustainability of adolescent reproductive health programmes.

Dr Eugenia Dankwa Quist, District Chief Executive, said the youth played an important role and the country stood to loose if effort was not put in place to protect them.

Mr Oppong Boakye of the National Secretariat of the Population Council inaugurated a 20-member District Population Advisory Committee for the District.
