Media must show good judgement – NCCE

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has asked the media to show good judgement and be guided by the national interest in its reportage.

Mr. Kwame Nkrumah, the Kumasi Metropolitan Director of the Commission, said it was important for journalists to be mindful of anything they put out there – the implication for the unity and cohesion of the society.

He added that they upheld professional ethics by avoiding factually inaccurate and one-sided stories.

He made the call at a meeting of the metropolitan inter-party advisory committee (IPAC) in Kumasi.

It provided the forum to deliberate on ways to remove political tension and safeguard the peace as the election campaign gathered momentum.

Mr. Nkrumah spoke of the need for fair coverage of the activities of all the political parties as they struggled to woo voters ahead of the presidential and parliamentary elections.

The print and electronic media should give equal access to every candidate contesting the polls without hindrance to tell the people what they would be doing differently to make things better for everybody.

The NCCE Metropolitan Director said that was the way to go to aid voters to make the right decisions on the day of the election.

He reminded hosts of political radio programmes to be more professional and to be bold to stop anybody from using those programmes to make inflammatory statements.

It must not be lost on the media that it had critical role to play to make this year’s election peaceful and successful, he added.
