GIBA urges media owners to show interest in contents on their stations

The Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association [GIBA] has charged owners of media houses in the country to show interest in the content of the various programmes on their stations.

“Media owners must be interested in the day to day activities of the stations”, the President of GIBA, Akwasi Agyeman said on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Tuesday.

Mr Agyeman was commenting on the issue of the Montie trio who are serving four months in prison for making contemptuous statements against judges of the Supreme Court.

The GIBA President observed in view of the changing trends in the media industry, it was critical that media owners organize media training for their staff to keep abreast of current trends.

Mr Akwasi Agyeman noted GIBA is in court with the National Media Commission (NMC) over the issue of content of programmes which the Commission is seeking to regulate.

However, the move has received strong opposition from GIBA, hence Mr Agyemang urged members do anything that may give the Commission enough evidence justify their intention.

The GIBA President said “GIBA was shocked about the [Supreme Court] sentencing”. He urged the Inspector General of Police to let his administration monitor radio and TV stations in Ghana to identify and arrest those who indulge in hate speeches, inciteful comments and foul language.

Petition Mr. Agyeman said “the signing of the petition for the release of the Montie trio is part of democracy. It does not mean they are not law abiding people because we have freedom of expression and that is part of democracy”.

He added that those signing the petition “are also persuading the President to use his powers to free the Montie 3 and I agree with that”.
