Mills made Ghana’s media very free – Joyce Banda

The former Malawian President Joyce Banda has heaped praises on the late John Evans Atta Mills for ensuring that Ghana’s media was not gagged during his presidency.

Speaking at a lecture at the Cape Coast University in commemoration of the 4th anniversary of the late President Mills’ death, Mrs. Joyce Banda said the late president was a principled leader who did his best to ensure that “Ghana’s media was very free.”

The 66-year-old who ruled Malawi between 2012 and 2014, said Ghana’s media is the envy of most African countries and has credited the late professor for that achievement.

The former Malawian president who described the late President Mills as her “hero” said the departed law professor’s immense wisdom was due to his fear and believe in God.

According to Mrs. Banda, her short encounter with the late tax expert at the Synagogue Church of All Nations in Nigeria left a lasting impression on her.

Prof. Atta Mills was the first Ghanaian president to have died in office on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at the 37 Military Hospital.

He was inaugurated on 7 January 2009, having defeated the ruling party candidate Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2008 election.

On Sunday July 24, a memorial service was held in his honour at the Asomdwee Park where his remains are resting.

Earlier today President John Mahama inaugurated “The John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Library” at the Chapel Square in Cape Coast in the Central region.
