The Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur on Friday charged parents to invest in the education of their children to enable them become responsible people in future and avoid spending their monies on alcohol.
According to him, government’s intervention in the education sector was not to make parents irresponsible but reduce cost to enable more children benefit from it.
Mr. Amissah-Arthur gave the advice when he donated computers and books to Methodist B School in Cape Coast, which happens to be his alma mata as part of the 65th Speech and Prize Giving Day of the school.
Most parents, instead of spending their monies on their children’s education, have rather resorted to drinking alcohol because the government has been providing the students with learning materials in the country, he stated.
He disclosed that despite the current harsh economic conditions, parents must help their children to achieve their aims.
The Vice President indicated that Ghanaian students cannot compete with their counterparts across the world if they do not gain good foundation, stressing the need for government, stakeholders, parents and old students to contribute their quota towards the development of education.
Central Regional Director of Education, Ben Amoah, stressed the need for parents to satisfy the needs of their children, adding that the children would require education to pursue their careers effectively.
Headmistress of the school, Rebecca Yeboah, hinted that the school has over the years excelled in both sports and academics.
She mentioned lack of renovation at the school, Information Communication Technology (ICT) Center, as well as erosion as some of the challenges confronting the school and appealed to them to assist in solving them.
Former Chief Fire Officer, the late Valis Akyianu, the Regional Minister, Kweku Ricketts Hagan are among some dignitaries who attended the school.
